How Can I Get My Pre-Teen to Become Interested in Reading?

Children ages 9-12 may seem uninterested in reading but I have a few ideas to try to get them more involved in this area.
1.  Have your child choose a movie that you know was adapted from a book.  After they have watched the movie, have them check out the book (or you have it checked out) and see if this sparks interest in reading.  Usually, I have heard students say that the book was so much better than the movie.  You can carry on a discussion with your child about the differences and likeness as they read the book which helps them to feel more independent and grown up.
2.  Pay attention to what your child is reading on their own.  Supply them with more books written by that author.
3.  Take your child to the bookstore and let them look around with no pressure to buy.  You may be surprised at how often they will find a book that they would like to read without you asking!
4.  Get a magazine subscription to a favorite magazine of your child's.  When it comes addressed to your child each month, it is something to look forward to and makes it more interesting to read!
