Tip of the Month: How Can I Get My Pre-Teen to Become Interested in Reading?

Now is the perfect time to start reading with your child, getting them to the library or visiting a bookstore to buy some new books. I will be picking one of my favorite books from three different age groups each month. The books that I choose will be ones that I have read to my classes or heard as a child. Goodnight Moon is a classic bedtime story. This year even has a special 50th year edition! Some ideas to use with this book are: *Make up your own words to go with your child's bedroom and fill them into the story. *Talk about the moon, show your child the moon through a window, say Goodnight to the moon. *Get more books about the moon. *Talk about what you do before you go to bed at night.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is great to read during season changes. It talks about a town where the weather brings food! Some ideas to use with this book are: *Talk about how the weather in the book is different from our weather. *Ask your child what they would like see come down if it rains or snows. *Talk about what it would smell like outside in each of the scenarios in the book when the weather changes. *Discuss whether this could be a true story or not and why?
On My Honor was well liked in upper elementary and Jr. High. It is a book that teaches a very good lesson. Some ideas to us with this book are: *Talk about what the characters learned in the story. *Discuss what the characters were feeling throughout the story. *Ask what your child would do in this same situation. *If this story was well liked, look for others by the same author.
This book has beautiful bright pictures and a fun story! Some ideas to use with this book are: *Make up your own foods that the caterpillar eats. *Talk about caterpillars and how they eat a lot to prepare to be a butterfly. *Go out looking for caterpillars. *Draw a picture of a caterpillar or tear out scraps of paper to create your own personal caterpillar.
The Giving Tree is a wonderful book about a boy who learns a very important lesson about life and caring for others. Some ideas to use with this book are: *Talk about what the little by learned from the tree. *Ask your child what they have done to help others during that day. *Talk about friends and how we should treat other people. *Discuss what things can really happen in true life and what things were not true in the story.
James and the Giant Peach is a classic that was made even more popular by its release on video. I have had several students read this book and enjoy it! Some ideas to us with this book are: *Talk about what the characters learned in the story. *Watch the video and compare it with the book. *Ask your child what their favorite parts of the story were and why. *If this story was well liked, look for others by Roald Dahl, he has many superb children's books.
Ages 0-3 Years The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss
This book is a classic!
Some ideas to use with this book are: *Talk about rhymes and pick out words that rhyme. *Look at your feet and draw them on a paper. *When the word feet is read, have your child point to their feet and say the word, "feet".
The cat in the Hat is another classic that your child is sure to enjoy.
Some ideas to use with this book are: *Talk about what the children learned from having the Cat in the house. *Ask your child what they have done to help clean their home. *Talk about what they should do if a stranger comes to the door. *Discuss what things can really happen in true life and what things were not true in the story.
Abel's Island by William Steig Abel's Island is a story of one mouse's journey. We read it each year to the class.
Some ideas to us with this book are: *Talk about what the characters learned in the story. *Talk about where your child would like to go on a journey. *Ask your child what their favorite parts of the story were and why.
Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney, Anita Jeram (Illustrator)
This book couldn't be cuter!
Some ideas to use with this book are: *Talk about feelings. *Tell your child how you feel about them. *Have child draw out how much they love you.
Bedtime for Frances by Russell Hoban, Garth Williams (Illustrator)
This series of Frances books is just wonderful!
Some ideas to use with this book are: *Talk about how your child feels when they go to bed. *Ask your child what they may think they see in the dark at night. *Talk about what they should do if they feel scared at night. *Discuss how they may have felt like Frances and what Frances did to feel better.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, Joseph Schindelman (Illustrator)
I still enjoy this book!
Some ideas to us with this book are: *Talk about what the characters learned in the story. *Talk about what your child would like to see if they went to a chocolate factory. *Ask your child what their favorite parts of the story were and why. *Rent the movie and compare it to the book.
